SHOPPING GUIDE

On Saturday, October the 2nd, 1824, Hamilton Hume and William Hovell began their historic expedition from the County of Cumberland, NSW. Their small party consisted of six men, two carts, three horses and numerous dogs.

The objective was to explore the land between Cumberland and Westernport.

After crossing the Goulburn at what is now Molesworth on Saturday, December 4th, 1824, Hovell recorded....

"The soil produces an abundance of fine grass and both hills and lowlands are thinly covered with timber. It is our opinion that we have not seen a more agreeable and interesting country since leaving home."

Settlement of Yea did not begin until 1837, but it soon flourished. The first town was known as Muddy Creek, named by Hume and Hovell, but in 1855 the name was changed to Yea, to honour Colonel Lacey Walter Yea, Officer in Charge of the Regiment, who was killed in action during the Crimean War.

Colonel Yea's portrait hangs in the Tower of London collection.

Yea's Tourist Information Centre

The Information Centre is located at the old Railway Station.

Behind the Information Centre is this excellent picnic and barbeque shelter, complete with tables and seats, cooking plates, and good toilet facilities. The picnic shelter is above numbered 2, and to the left is the flat ground upon which the train lines ran.

In the distance numbered 1 is a bicycle rail trail which is in the process of being built.

To the right of the area numbered 3, is the children's playground.

To the right of the picnic shelter is a magnificent young children's playground, with the theme of the park being trains. The playground has been set out with very educational fun ideas, and comes complete with computerised train noises.
