THE RUTHERGLEN MUSEUM

Here at the Rose of Sharon is a Museum full of extremely interesting and factual memorabillia regarding Rutherglen.

The Museum has a superb collection of newspapers of the Gold Mining Era. Above you can see the Melbourne Herald, an evening newspaper, for Monday, July 16th 1877. The price of this newspaper was 1 penny.

( There were 12 pennies in one shilling, and in 1966 for decimal currency, the shilling was converted to a 10 cent piece. Thus effectively this newspaper cost 1 cent. The Melbourne Herald Sun now costs $1.00).

The Chiltern Newspaper was known as the Federal Standard, and the original building and the printing machines are still located near Lake Anderson in Chiltern.

Above you can see the Federal Standard for Wednesday, February 27th, 1861.

Above you can see a complete printers cabinet, with thousands of different alphabetical letters in different sizes and fonts, as used by these newspapers in the 1850's onwards.
