For about half of the distance from Gapstead to Brookfield the Trail is out of site of the road, as it runs through a small forest valley, and then through rolling farm country, and for the other half, the trail runs along the western side of the road.

Above left you can see the rail trail running in a straight line next to the Highway heading to Everton.

Above right you can see the monument to Hume and Hovell, built in 1924, to celebrate 100 years since the explorers came through this area. The rail trail crosses the Highway just after this monument at Brookfield.

Above left you can see where the Rail Trail is crossing the Highway at Brookfield, and then heading inland away from the road towards Everton Station. A few kilometres further along the Trail comes to Diffey Road, photo above right.

The street signs say Beechworth, Rail Trail 25 to the East, Rail Trail Wangaratta to the North, Everton 1 Km to the west, and Rail Trail Bright to the south.

From this point it is only one kilometre at most to Everton, which boasts a very friendly Pub, a well stocked General Store with an excellent Take Away Food selection, and a Caravan Park for those who need to stay the night.

Above you can see where the Rail Trails diverge at the Everton Station, one heading to Beechworth, and one going straight ahead to Bright. Above right you can see the Everton Station which was very near completion at time of photographing.

Just to the North West of the Everton Station is the magnificent Federation Lemon Scented Ghost Gum, planted in 1901 to commemorate Australia's Nationalism.

From the road as you are driving from Everton, pass the station and as you commence to swing right to cross the Rail Trail, this magnificent tree is in the paddock on your right.
