Kelly Family Homestead
Step through the back of Kate's Cottage Gifts and Souvenir Shop to an authentic replica of the Kelly Homestead. Ned Kelly moved to Glenrowan West ( Greta ) at the age of 12. After his death, his family continued to live there. Over a period of approximately 30 years, they added 2 extensions, a wooden floor and three brick chimneys. Only the rubble of the chimneys remain on the original site today. Ned Kelly's descendants still own the original site but it is not available for inspection or access. Please honour their privacy. This careful reproduction of the Kelly's Greta Homestead is part of a new Kelly Museum display and is a must to visit. The display was featured recently on TV's Getaway Program as " The Best ( Ned Kelly ) Museum." The Shop and Display have also appeared in My Town, Woman's Day, Channel 7's Discover, the Weather Channel, and the new documentary, Besieged.
The cottage above is an exact replica of the Kelly Homestead, which was located a few kilometres outside Glenrowan. This cottage is located in the Ned Kelly Museum at the rear of Kate's Cottage Gifts and Souvenir Shop.
The above photo shows the main room of the Kelly Homestead, the kitchen/ dining room. The room has been fitted out with implements and furniture of the time, being 1870 to 1890. When you visit, note the extremely large or deep fireplace, built so that large logs could be thrown straight on.
Note - the above two photos - as was the practice of the era, the walls and roof were lined with newspaper, hessian and calico. The floor was earth, usually consolidated with bullocks blood.
The above room is typically furnished and many siblings would have shared the one bed in the Kelly Homestead.
When walking through this house, you are instantly hit with the stark realities of the hardships that our forefathers had to endure as this Colony was being settled. The living conditions in the late 1800's would be completely unacceptable to the modern standards of people in the 21st Century. The Kellys were tough people brought up in very tough times.
